Launch in France of the largest European project for and automated mobility, to exploit the potential of 5G through the study of use cases. Cerema is a partner in the project and will contribute its expertise, particularly in the area of environmental assessment.

5G OPEN ROAD is one of the largest European programs in Europe to assist the driving of connected automated vehicles, on roads open to traffic. The project is worth 90 million, this project is co-financed by the consortium members under the and the BPI (Banque Publique d'Investissement).

The 5G OPEN ROAD project, which will run until September 2024 brings together an ecosystem of sixteen private, public and academic partners and subcontractors representing a new value chain. The players will work together, in close collaboration with local authorities on the benefits of 5G and the associated challenges: supporting innovation in this technology of the future, accelerating the development of technologies in France for the digital, automotive and connected mobility industries, and creating cross-sector links to meet the needs of the regions.

A real revolution is coming in connected and automated mobility services, 5G will enable the development of mobility services by connecting vehicles to each other and to roadside infrastructures, for safety and traffic fluidity in traffic in dense areas. Among the use cases the project has identified the safety of pedestrians and other pedestrians and other vulnerable people, reducing reduction of the carbon footprint of mobility, and last mile logistics, transportation on demand via autonomous shuttles.

The first physical test environment for autonomous driving in Europe, 5G OPEN ROAD is deployed on the Saclay plateau and Vélizy (Île de France) and is based on :

  • of the 5G telecom networks from Bouygues Telecom and Nokia,

  • a variety of autonomous and connected vehicles in 5G from Stellantis, Renault, Valeo, Milla group, Twinswhell,

  • smart and connected roadside equipment and from Lacroix city

  • a message and data processing platform, the decision algorithms and applications providing services from Capgemini, Goggo Network, Montimage and Smile

  • the know-how and skills of institutes and test centres: Cerema, UTAC, Systematic.

Case study of the 5G Open Road project

To test these different use cases the project will have at its disposal consumer vehicles with L2+[1] autonomy level L2+[1] (Renault and Stellantis), cab robots level L4 [2] (Valeo), autonomous electric shuttles (MILLA), autonomous logistics droids (Twinswheel, Valeo or Milla) for the last kilometer and micro-mobility objects micro-mobility objects all connected in 5G.

The stakes will concern the safety of accident-prone areas accident-prone areas in the city (intelligent intersections) congested areas, autonomous last-mile logistics, on-demand last mile logistics, on-demand transport by autonomous shuttle, modal shift and vehicle services through an adapted multimodal hub.

To implement these services, the 5G OPENROAD project will focus on:

  • the deployment of network infrastructure and roadside units,

  • the development of the data and services platform,

  • the validation of the operational safety of the C-V2X system,

  • the guarantee of trust and digital sobriety

  • the deployment of profitable and sustainable services for economic stakeholders.

The 5G OPENROAD project will enable partner companies to deploy products and services taking into account taking into account customer needs tested in real-life conditions conditions, the actual maturity of the technologies to provide reliable services, and the constraints and priorities of urban areas to equip their territories and the expected benefits.

The issues of acceptability, energy and digital sobriety, and data management will be the subject of particular attention and Cerema will be particularly involved in the evaluation of the project after the tests, with regard to the stakes of energy transition, and the acceptance of the different use cases by citizens.

It is also present in the reflections on the governance between public and private players in connected mobility and leads the scientific and technical committee that determines the project's strategic roadmap and for the project and ensures the compatibility of the experiments with current and future standards.
